Beyond the Odyssey…

As a member of St. Matthew Catholic School’s Odyssey of the Mind (OM) Team for the past 4 years, I have had the opportunity to pursue my love of art and fashion and create my own costumes and designs for long term performances. Use of recycled items in costumes and props is important in OM because it not only saves costs, but also stretches your creativity.

It is an extremely exciting prospect for me to take what I have learned in OM over the last 4 years and apply it to something like recycled fashions for Charlotte Fashion Week.

Below is more information on the Odyssey of the Mind Program and my personal Odyssey.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.

Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.  To learn more about Odyssey of the Mind check out:

In 2016 and 2018 my team and I were first place winners @ the NC Central Region OM Tournament. But in 2018, my teammates and I also won 3rd place (bronze medals) at the NC State Finals Tournament at Wingate University.

The OM tournaments also provide a great opportunity to show off individual creativity in the form of a hat parade.

In 2017, I won most creative hat for my ‘sweet’ redesign of a New Year’s Eve party hat (accessorized with candy glasses and a ring pop!)

And in 2018, I won most creative hat for ‘Pink Monkey’ made from trash bags, play boas and cardboard.

Looking forward to sharing my upcycled designs inspired by ‘Calling All Super Heroes’ in September 2018!
